If you’re interested, there is a ‘Celebrate Science’ event at the Palace Green, Durham this week. It’s a free family-friendly science festival on Tuesday 24th-Thursday 26th October 10am-4pm daily.
Your holiday science for this week is to make a spooky screaming cup. Here’s how to do it:
You will need:
- A large disposable plastic cup
- String (at least 20cm)
- Water or violin rosin
How to:
- Make a hole in the bottom of the cup just large enough to thread the string through.
- Tie a double knot in the end of the string inside the cup.
- Cover the string outside the cup with violin rosin or water.
- Hold the cup with one hand and with the other, pinch the string between your thumb and forefinger.
- Slide your fingers down the string while maintaining a firm grip on the string. Your should hear a screaming sound.
Try repeating the experiment with different sized cups and strings of different length to see what effect it has on the screams.
