P.E. SPORT PREMIUM FUNDING
Following the London 2012 Olympics, the government agreed to invest over £450million in school sports funding upto 2016 and in the last Parliament this was agreed to be extended until at least 2020, partially funded for by the introduction of the “sugar-tax”, and linked to the Government’s Childhood Obesity Plan.
This is known as Sport Premium funding and is ring fenced in school to be spent solely on school sport and P.E. This year (2017/18) we will receive £20,500 – double last year.
Schools are held accountable by Ofsted regarding the spending of this grant and Ofsted will report on how we spend our Sport Premium funding.
OFSTED (FEBRUARY 2017):
“The primary physical education and sports funding is used well to ensure that pupils take part in a wide range of sporting activities and competitions, including dance, netball, football, basketball, gymnastics and karate. External specialist coaches are used to extend pupils’ skills and to develop the existing skills of members of staff.”
The attached documents show historically our action plans, achievements and looking forward our aims and ambitions for the current academic year and budget proposal.
Accountability
Schools must spend this additional funding on IMPROVING their provision of P.E. and sport, but each school has the freedom to choose how to do this. Inspectors may review our school website, looking for evidence of our sporting provision as well as when they visit our school. Schools must be able to account for their spending and to show how it has improved sporting provision.
Competition
Competition is also an important feature – it’s about personal competition as well as team competitions both within school (intra-school) and between schools (inter-school) particularly in KS2.
NEW FOR 2017-2018 – SWIMMING DATA
For the 2017 to 2018 academic year, there is a new condition requiring schools to publish how many pupils within their year 6 cohort are meeting the national curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
This year (2017-2018) we have changed our structure of swimming in order to begin to address these new Government requirements. All our year 5 children receive free swimming lessons on a Tuesday afternoon in school time at Dunston Leisure Centre. They start in September and swim weekly until the end of May half term.
From May half term until the end of the summer term, all children that did not meet Government benchmark swimming requirements at the end of year 5 last year (so now in year 6) start swimming lessons again. This means they get a focused, full afternoon of swimming with the teachers at the Leisure Centre and Miss Routledge, one of our Support Staff in school who is also a Level 2 swimming coach.
DATA: For our 2016-2107 Year 6 cohort (now left and in year 7) we received data from Dunston Leisure Centre that approximately 7 out of the 57 (12%) were unable to swim 25m competently or demonstrate a range of strokes and lifesaving skills.
For our current 2017-2018 Year 6 cohort we have 10 children (17%) who are unable to competently swim 25m. We have 13 children (22%) who need to refresh one or more of the three main strokes the children get taught and perform a self rescue. All of these children will therefore start swimming lessons again in May after half term up to the Summer. Final data of swimmers and non-swimmers will be reported at the end of the summer term 2018.
